Which is absolutely fair, because the gameplay is absolutely abysmal at times. Tbh I don’t think you could enjoy these games if mediocre-to-bad mechanics are something you can’t tolerate.

It’s very appealing to me.īut they’re obviously full of jank. And storywise, they’re usually pretty minimalistic and I think more about evoking a feeling than telling a complex plot. And the benefit of this is making a mysterious and even kind of spooky world where you know something happened there, but you have no idea what it was and now you’re left to explore the aftermath as a very small thing in a very large world. The games aren’t afraid to let you struggle, or immerse you in silence, or let you just figure stuff out semi-organically (although iirc TLG had a bunch of tutorial popups dialogues that I thought were annoying). Am I just too jaded and impatient?Īs an enjoyer of Ico, SOTC, and TLG, I think the appeal is like. I was at least willing to finish it but I also wanted to see how things concluded. I don't know how anyone else felt about it, but I just couldn't like it. It kind of gave a bad rap to an otherwise good looking game. But the cutscenes and gameplay tended to have massive frame rate drops that just looked bad. Sure there were a lot of ruins and rubble throughout but they at least felt unique enough to not feel too similar. The environments themselves were mostly interesting.

I experienced that a lot but maybe I'm just bad at platformers.Īnd then the appearances. It was like how in Assassin's Creed games when you mean to jump in one direction and the game just throws you somewhere completely different. The actual platforming mechanics were also hard to deal with.

But I couldn't even keep track of how many times I thought I was doing something wrong only to look up a walkthrough and realize that Trico just wasn't responding to me. You eventually learn to communicate via commands and you actually need to experiment with your environment in order to progress. See, the primary mechanic is to traverse this giant valley-prison thing with your new best friend. But I felt frustration more than any other emotion with this game.

I mean, I felt sympathy for the boy and Trico at times. It was honestly great.īut then it just sort of went downhill from there. Basically, without trying to spoil anything, you're stuck in a desperate situation, have to take a leap of faith, only to be saved at the very last moment. I got so frustrated with the first few parts of the game that I considered being done with it, but I pushed through and made it to the bridge scene. This was actually my favorite part of the game. The game encourages you to form this bond with Trico, the beast, and focuses on how that evolves. You wake up in a dingy cave next to a giant beast who you have to work with to eventually escape whatever prison-like place you're in. I knew you would have to bond with this creature and that it was a platformer sort of game.Īs far as I know, nothing is really explained to you at the beginning of the game. I had heard some good things about it but never really watched any gameplay. I went into this game completely blind and, to be honest, a little excited. I also didn't care for Shadow of the Collossus either. I only ever heard about it maybe a little before it was finally released. For context, I didn't follow this game when it was first announced. I initially thought about making a long rant post about it but I guess I just want to understand what makes it such a critically acclaimed game.
